New ideas I'm trying to grasp:
- Buying seeds versus saving seeds. need to consider that seeds you buy are accustomed to different soils, temps, environments from Hawaii
- Heirloom versus hybrids
- Planting plans: Planting crops with various harvest times to be continually harvesting something each week. A group: <30 days from sow or transplant to harvest, B Group: 31-60 days from sow or transplant to harvest, C group = 61-90 days from sow or transplant to harvest
- Once completely harvested, plant a crop in that spot from a different family to avoid depleting the soil of the particular nutrients that family takes
- Have to consider germination rate and plant # of seeds accordingly to harvest you are expecting
This sanitized environment and "don't let the seeds/package touch the ground" is quite different than the seedling making i'm use to. Now i'm self-conscious about the casualty I take to making seedlings at Ted's and surprised he lets me do this task with 4 year olds! Beginning to understand farmer's hesitation for volunteer "help" on farms.
