Breaking all the rules. Re-using soil that has been drenched by rain and was pretty dry and lifeless looking to begin with. This is not the "ideal" environment to start seedlings in. Scooped up some dirt from the spot I plan on planting them into and added that as well. I am certainly not spoiling these seedlings, should they decide to sprout. From biggest to smallest: Cucumber, cauliflower, and kale. Sprout!!! Do it!!! Please!!

Dave and I started about 8 different crops on 1/11 and we had nearly 100 % germination! Only complete fail was Collards from Southern Exposure, so we then replaced those with collards and Okra from Seed Savers. 1/18 we had to "step up" our starters, as in, transplant to larger cells, not step up the pace of making new seedlings. Minor confusion on my part.
There is a theory, not appreciated by Dave, that you can conserve on soil and improve your crop by starting them in smaller cells, transplanting later the ones that actually germinate into larger cells, giving them more new potting soil and nutrients along with the new home. But with a near 100% germination rate, it was time we COULD have been "stepping up" our number of seedlings! I am proud of my so-far meticulous recording. Dave and I are working on our plot plan and determining the exact number of each plant we need... and how we are going to plant our fractal antenna design!!!! FRACTAL ANTENNA. Are you thinking NO WAY??? WAY!!!!! Kale from Kaneohe plot!!! Started seedling 8/10, transplanted 9/21, harvested/kidnapped to xxxx 12/31, returned/transported via cooler to kaimuki 1/2, sauteed into soup 1/16.... KALE YOU AMAZE ME
...which sadly is not appreciated or understood by the Monitoring Committee. "Row C53: insufficient meeting attendance (erroneous), no dues recorded (no less than the former garden President of the past two years!), Plot overgrown with weeds (these folks are obviously closed minded about what constitutes a healthy ecosystem) and not actively used (see below photo of Dave's turmeric harvest)" We traded a kale keiki for... these things

Jan 2 to XXXX, cc: David Happy 2014 XXXX! Hope you and your fam, XXXX XXXX XXXX, had good holidays. I'm actually driving XXXX XXXX to fly back to Hawaii tonight! Dave and Annie went by the it's on New Year's Eve to harvest our bounty and we're bummed because some of our best stuff had been harvested and kidnapped, hopefully for a ransom I am capable of paying. Some of best carrots leeks and kales that we were waiting to harvest and transplant. I "heard from someone that heard from someone" blah blah that you mentioned harvesting some of our babies because you weren't sure we were coming back for them. anyways, just wanted to reach out to you for more info, or if you might have been thrown under the bus as the scapegoat :) Regardless, I'm stoked that our veggies were worthy of abduction! But would've like to eat them too :) Sent from my iPhone |
