One layer of the GMO issue for me is standing by some of the principles I picked up in college and grad school here. How it is, is not how it has to be. The status quo was not inevitable, and it is impossible that it will remain the staus quo forever. It can appear impossible that what is can change, but the only thing that is impossible is that it wont change. And everything that is, likely appeared impossible and crazy in the past. So if things will inevitably change, we need to consciously imagine how we want it to be, and no matter how impossible it seems at the time, human beings tend to surprise themselves with what they are capable of achieving.
I can't imagine people who live in a comfortable existence rallying up enough frustration and motivation to go up against corporate control of our democracy. I feel like I only read about revolutionary change in places that have dire living and economic conditions, like no one puts up a fight until there's no other choice. In America, the subtlety of what's wrong and abusive in our system makes passivity a real easy route. Our election have credibility, we're not under some military dictatorship or something blatantly undemocratic, yet leaders here get away with abuses in power that Americans would condemn of other countries. Like our regulatory systems that are rigged to be biased towards corporations over human health and safety, evident by who is in charge of these systems! (The revolving door between biotech industry and USDA, FDA, EPA!!! It all comes back to GMO's ahhhhhhh!!! Seriously, I think I'm so obsessed with GMO's because there are so many issues involved that shed light to me on the undemocratic and unhumanistic aspects of our democracy) But, if we pay attention and have dilligence and patience, and dream big dreams of the impossible things we'd like to see anything is possible.
"Yes, I failed to reach my impossible goal… However, because I set the impossible goal, it allowed me to open my mind and proceed with activities that caused me to do more than I’d ever done before.... I’ve
continued to set impossible goals, and often surpass them in that month or in a month not too far hence. So, for me setting impossible goals opened my mind to doing more.
So, if you’re discouraged, have trouble setting goals, and making future
plans, try setting impossible goals. Then go after them, knowing it’s alright to fail, because it’s impossible anyway, and my bet is you’ll do more, in less time, and more effectively, than you ever have before, simply because you’ve effectively got rid of the fear of failure." By Brian W. Hurlburt
"Gerber, Abbott Nutrition Labs, Mead Johnson, Walmart, Kellogg’s and the Federal Government are force-feeding genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to the most vulnerable among us: our children.
Nearly all of our infant formula, including every one of the millions of bottles distributed free by the government, contains genetically engineered corn or soy, as well as milk from cows injected by bovine growth hormone.
The FDA doesn’t conduct or even require a single safety study on GMOs. They allow companies like Monsanto to do their own safety tests. Keep in mind that the FDA also assured us that Monsanto’s past products – DDT, PCBs and Agent Orange – were perfectly safe. This was before they were banned. Today, Monsanto can put GMOs into baby bottles, sippy cups, and breakfast cereal, without even telling the FDA or consumers.
Tell the FDA that they must stop companies from feeding our babies
genetically modified infant formula and baby food and to stop using our
kids as guinea pigs.
